SAMRoute: A safety breakeven threshold of one day

Compare the safety breakeven threshold of our in-silico preliminary diagnosis to traditional or semi-automated confirmatory on-site diagnostics.

#intro
SAMRoute is a pre-diagnostic solution that assesses risks impacting transportation infrastructure. Its pre-diagnostics are 100% in-silico, drastically reducing costs compared to traditional methods such as on-site inspections.

Using the ROI calculator on this page, we compare SAMRoute to other diagnostic methods. We quantify the minimal gain required for each diagnostic to achieve what we call safety breakeven.

The calculator is structured around three groups of variables.
  • Section A gathers assumptions and the characteristics of the infrastructure being analyzed.
  • Section B covers variables specific to SAMRoute.
  • Section C details variables related to using an external provider and internal control visits.

Accelerated ROI with SAMRoute: Comparison of Diagnostic Solutions

The graphic shows that SAMRoute offers a return on investment in 1 to 2 days per year, compared to on-site diagnostics which require up to 100 days to become profitable.

#section-a

Section A: Assumptions and infrastructure overview

Total network size, cost per fatality, event count, and attributability

The adjacent table helps you identify the extent of your infrastructure in kilometers. Values may vary depending on the counting method used.

Table. Network size.

Zone type Network size
Urban area 300 to 3,000 km
Department 3,000 to 30,000 km
Region 30,000 to 100,000 km
All of France 1 to 2 million km (*)

(*): Depending on the counting method.
The cost of a fatality is estimated between €2 and €5 million. This figure takes into account different levels of accident severity, as explained below:
  • For an accident with no injury, the cost covers only material damages. It ranges between €1,000 and €10,000.
  • In the case of minor injuries, medical expenses are added but without lasting effects. The total cost is between €10,000 and €100,000.
  • For a serious injury requiring emergency care and resulting in lifelong disabilities, the cost ranges from €100,000 to €1 million.
  • In the event of a fatality, the cost includes material damages, healthcare costs, funeral expenses, and the financial consequences related to the loss of relative. The cost reaches several million euros.

Table. Cost of a fatality.

Accident type Estimated cost
No injury accident €1,000 to €10,000
Minor injury €10,000 to €100,000
Serious injury €100,000 to €1 million
Fatality €2 to €5 million
The following table shows the number of fatalities per year (the event) based on the size of the geographic area concerned. These figures offer a broad perspective on risk, whether for an urban area, a department, or on a national scale.

Table. Number of fatalities.

Zone Number of events (*)
Entire France Around 3,200
Department 100 to 300
Urban area 10 to 30

(*): Fatalities per year
Attributability represents the causal share attributed to infrastructure in accidents, expressed as a percentage. A figure of 100% indicates systematic causality, while 0% means no causality. Three factors influence accidents.
  • Driver behavior, such as non-compliance with rules or driving under the influence, contributes to 60% to 80% of cases.
  • A defect in the vehicle is responsible in 5% to 15% of cases.
  • Finally, the infrastructure itself is involved in 10% to 20% of situations.

Table. Attributability of Road Accidents.

Factor Contribution to Accidents (%)
Driver behavior 60 to 80
Vehicle defect 5 to 15
Infrastructure 10 to 20
In our calculation, we attribute 1% causality to the infrastructure, which is highly conservative (10x).
Since this value is constant, it does not impact comparisons between diagnostics.

However, when interpreting results, it’s essential to remember that we’ve reduced infrastructure's role by a factor of ten — and consequently the risk cost for which it is responsible (see the denominator of the safety ROI threshold defined below).

Section B: Variables specific to SAMRoute

Coverage and total kilometers, annual package, and optional consulting

Three parameters configure the costs associated with SAMRoute.
  • The coverage is set to 100% of the network (by default).
  • The total kilometers corresponds to the full extent of your network.
  • The annual package cost for SAMRoute is pre-filled based on the total kilometers in your network.
  • An optional consulting service (post-hoc analysis) can be added for an additional fee (default: €0).

Section C: Variables for alternative diagnostics

External service and internal control

The external service offers a solution with:
  • a fixed cost and
  • a fee per kilometer covered.
The internal control is conducted by your teams with:
  • hourly rates and
  • fees per kilometer traveled.
In both cases, coverage is limited to 5%, unlike SAMRoute, which covers 100% of the network.
#metrics

Metric: Breakeven threshold and safety ROI

The breakeven threshold is expressed as a percentage of total risk cost or in days

The safety breakeven threshold

The safety breakeven threshold quantifies the minimum impact that diagnostics must have on the total risk cost to justify the diagnostic expenditure.

It is the ratio between:
  • the cost of diagnostics — defined in sections B and C, and
  • the total risk cost — defined in section A.
This ratio is expressed:
  • as a percentage, and also
  • in days — where 100% corresponds to 365 days.

The safety ROI

By extension, the safety ROI (return on investment) is the ratio between:
  • the safety breakeven threshold (expressed as a %), and
  • the safety gain (%) targeted by your organization.
For example, an ROI of 2 means that each euro invested in the diagnostic technique reduces the total risk cost by 2 euros.
#results

Results: 1 day for SAMRoute, 10 for internal control, and 85 for external service

Comparison of SAMRoute pre-diagnosis to external or internal control diagnostics

Each option has a breakeven threshold representing the minimal impact needed to justify the investment. The key results (KPIs, green boxes) show these thresholds.
  • For SAMRoute, this threshold is 0.3%, or one day.
  • For an external service, this threshold is 23%, or 85 days for a 5% coverage.
  • For your internal control, this threshold is 2.7%, or 10 days over 5% of the network.
The table and chart reverse the perspective. Starting from your safety gain targets, such as 0.25%, 1%, or 5% over a year, the safety ROI for each diagnostic at this gain level is calculated.
In the table:
  • the rows represent your safety gain objectives,
  • the columns indicate the profitability of different diagnostics at this level of safety gain.
If the profitability threshold is not reached, the ROI is less than 1; if it is greater than 1, the expenditure is justified.

Similarly, the graph shows:
  • the safety gain objective horizontally, and
  • the safety ROI on the vertical axis.
The curves notably reveal the breakeven point (ROI = 1) and the gap between the three types of diagnostics.

Why choose the SAMRoute pre-diagnostic?

Unlike alternative diagnostics, which require on-site inspections and only cover a fraction of the network, SAMRoute covers 100% of the network. This comprehensive coverage allows you to identify risks across all segments, including those often overlooked, while being extremely economical.

We invite you to try out the calculator and adjust the parameters to fit your specific needs.
